Papers, 1838-1871.

Includes prose and poetry manuscripts, clippings of printed poetry, and copyrights. The prose consists largely of short anecdotal tales on a wide range of topics. Poetry manuscripts include poems concerning Trinity (then Washington) College; one poem attributed to M. G. Lewis; translations from the Aeneid; and poems on the Civil War, later included in his volumes, Poems, Lyrics of a Day, and War-Lyrics. Printed poetry includes translations from the Iliad and the Odyssey and clippings of poetry from newspapers, later included in Lyrics of a Day and Lines of Battle.
